Recruiting Made Simple December 7th 2018

Let me start by introducing myself. I am a mortgage insider who now runs a successful mortgage recruiting company. I spent 15 years as a top Loan Officer, Top Branch Manager and eventually a Vice President inside the mortgage industry. BUT even with all of those successes I still remember the early days and my struggles with recruiting top Loan Officers and Branch Managers.

I had so many questions centered around recruiting and so few answers. Everyone assumed that because I was in a leadership position I was automatically a great recruiting leader AND THIS SIMPLY WASN’T TRUE. The real truth was that I STRUGGLED RECRUITING!

I despised cold calling recruits!

My meetings with recruits were actually pretty lame!

I tended to discuss things like compensation, loan products, CRM tools, marketing support and culture . But the one thing I knew was I had to keep trying as I wasn’t going to give up on growing my branches.

I was convinced of 3 things that now in hindsight seem silly….

That timing was everything. I would miss out on recruit after recruit even if I had been in contact with them prior. I was puzzled by the fact that people I had spoken with would join my competitors and sometimes within a few months after my speaking with them.

That it required 2+ hours of recruiting every day in order to have any success recruiting. I became a slave to my business as the other 15 hats I wore each day required 10 hours a day. So adding 2 to 4 hours of recruiting had me working 60 hours per week.

That I had to be a super salesman with off the charts “woo” in order to be a success. It made total sense to me that only the best salesman in each market would win the recruiting game.

Now in hindsight it’s so easy to see that EACH OF THESE WERE ABSOLUTELY FALSE BELIEFS!!! The worst part is that these beliefs kept me from accomplishing my growth goals year after year and cost me hundreds if not thousands of hours of precious time I would never be able to get back.

Eventually I began to understand this….
Timing has nothing to do with recruiting great talent

That you can be a successful recruiting leader in just a few minutes per day

That salesmanship has NOTHING to do with being a great recruiter. In fact it actually HURTS your recruiting efforts to be a good salesman.

In my season of struggling I am reminded of these being my everyday questions…….

After almost 10 years of recruiting struggles I realized one day I had been going about it all wrong.

In early 2014 everything changed. I took a full week and removed myself from the “matrix” and built a step by step recruiting system. I actually went off the grid and went away. Away from everything………my office, my email, my cell phone and my team. I knew I had to devise a better plan for recruiting and I was committed to doing exactly that. After a full week my new recruiting system was finished!

All said my new system contained 32 steps. You see I planned every little detail of my recruiting. I planned how I would identified someone as being the right Loan Officer all the way out to the moment they accepted my offer BUT mostly everything in between those two steps.

Then it happened. It was as if I suddenly had the golden touch in recruiting. In the next 14 months I would open 7 branches and 4 of those branches came in back to back months.

IT WAS A WHIRLWIND!!!

What I realize in hindsight is that my system HAD CONNECTED THE DOTS ON 3 RECRUITING SECRETS which allowed me to win again and again when recruiting top recruits.

The cool thing is that ANYONE can do these 3 things and become a successful recruiting leader.

The truth is that recruiting is a teachable skill that simply requires understanding 3 things (remember my mention to my 3 secrets). AND when you understand them anyone can be a successful recruiting leader.
